How Neurotoxins Work

Neurotoxins like Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, and Xeomin are injected into specific muscles in the face. Once injected, they block the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that signals muscles to contract. Without that signal, the muscle relaxes, and the skin resting on top of it stays smooth. This reduces the appearance of existing wrinkles and helps prevent new lines from forming. The treatment itself only takes a few minutes, with results beginning to appear within a few days and the full effect visible within one to two weeks. Neurotoxin treatments are temporary, generally lasting three to six months depending on the product, and results are easily maintained with regular touch up appointments.

We are pleased to offer several different neurotoxins at Premiere Concierge and Wellness, so your treatment can be tailored to your face rather than the other way around. All four of the products below work through the same basic mechanism, blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, but each one has its own personality. They differ in formulation, in how quickly they take effect, in how long they last, and in how they diffuse through the surrounding tissue. During your consultation, your provider will help you decide which option fits your anatomy, your lifestyle, and the result you are working toward.

• Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA) is the most widely recognized and studied neurotoxin in the world. It works by blocking the nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions, softening expression lines for about three to four months on average. Its decades of research and predictable, consistent results have made Botox the benchmark against which every other neurotoxin is measured.
• Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) is another trusted neurotoxin that had been used for aesthetic purposes in Europe for many years before earning FDA approval in the United States. Patients often appreciate that Dysport tends to take effect a little faster than Botox, with visible softening in as little as two or three days. It also has a slightly wider diffusion pattern, which can make it a strong choice for treating larger areas like the forehead, where the goal is a soft, even result across a broad zone. Dysport is measured in different units than Botox, so the numbers on your chart may look higher, but the clinical effect is comparable and typically lasts three to four months.
• Daxxify® (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) is one of the newer neurotoxins on the market and is best known for its longer duration of effect, often lasting six months or more. This longevity comes from a novel peptide based stabilization system that replaces the human serum albumin found in most other products. Patients who prefer fewer appointments throughout the year are often drawn to this option.
• Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is sometimes called the naked neurotoxin because it contains no accessory proteins. This streamlined formulation may reduce the risk of antibody formation over time, which makes Xeomin a good option for patients who have started to develop resistance to other products or who simply prefer a cleaner formulation from the beginning of their treatment journey.
