How Neurotoxins Work

Neurotoxins like Botox, Daxxify, and Xeomin are injected into specific muscles in the face. Once injected, they block the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes muscle contractions. Without muscle movement, the skin overlying those muscles remains smooth, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and preventing new lines from forming. The treatment typically takes only a few minutes, and results appear within a few days, with the full effect visible within one to two weeks. Neurotoxin treatments are temporary, typically lasting 3 to 6 months, and can be easily maintained with regular touch-up treatments.

• Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is sometimes called the “naked” neurotoxin because it contains no accessory proteins, which may reduce the risk of antibody formation and make it a good option for those who’ve developed resistance to other products.
